11/11 Recruiting Update

November 11, 2008 · 1 Comment

Rutgers has received a commitment from 2010 Secaucus lineman Betim Bujari. Keith Sargeant has more details.

“I think Betim realized it’s a great opportunity, and why waste time,” Voorhees said. “Let’s be honest, 150 schools may want him but he can only go to one. He loves the place, his family loves the place, so what more does he need to see? It’s got everything he wants, it’s close to home and it’s a great football program. What place is better than this one?”

The 10th-year Secaucus coach said Bujari is “an aggressive” and “versatile” lineman who can play anywhere on the line. His brother, Bekim, is a freshman linebacker at Division III Kean in Union.

“Betim’s a big kid — obviously Rutgers can’t recruit linemen that are small — but he’s got all the tools to be a great one,” Voorhees said. “He’s a very good player now and he’s just 16 years old, but I think his best football days are ahead of him.”

Voorhees, whose team is 7-0 heading into a clash with Hudson County rival Harrison on Friday night, said Bujari’s commitment is solid.

“Betim comes from a very strong family and I think loyalty is very important to them,” Voorhees said. “The one thing we warned him about is obviously there will be other schools calling him, (saying) ‘Our place is better than their place’ and that sort of thing. But, you know what, I think he’s happy with everything he sees in Rutgers. It’s just a perfect fit.”

Sounds good.

RU’s staff is turning over every rock looking for a tailback. It’s a long shot, but could Tennessee commit Toney Williams be the next Ray Rice?

Williams heard from a few schools this week hoping he would change his mind.

Williams said he’s received calls from Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Georgia Tech and Rutgers.

Williams said each school let him know a spot is available if he wants it.

“That’s if I change my mind,” Williams said. “It’s not anything like they’re trying to pressure me to change my mind.”

Williams likely won’t change his mind as long as UT hires a coach by January.

More non-statements from Isaac Holmes:

“I want to make my decision as soon as possible, but it’s getting harder and harder,” said the 6-3, 295-pound lineman for Hoboken (N.J.) High School. “I’m just riding it out, having fun and working on narrowing my list down.”

There are quite a few schools out there who hope to land Holmes. The list includes Florida, Penn State, Maryland, Rutgers, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

“I’ve been talking to schools everyday,” he said. “Right now, I am focused on finding a school that has a great coaching staff and players that I want to be around. I need a place where I feel comfortable, because I am going to be there for the next four years.”

Monday means that it was time again for Coach Schiano’s weekly presser (video), where he explained why Damaso Munoz is starting over Manny Abreu, among other topics.

The legend of Zaire Kitchen continues to grow.

Mike Ford and Jamar Taylor are on the mend for USF.

Meet the Fantastic Four. Corey Chandler was in street clothes as RU easily won its exhibition behind a big performance from Mike Rosario. I haven’t heard yet what’s going on with Corey. Tomorrow is NLOI day for the fall signing period in basketball.

Sunday saw Eric Foster and the Colts square off with Darnell Stapleton and the Steelers. Foster stopped Pittsburgh RB Mewelde Moore on 2nd down, and then had a phenomenal goal line stand after charging through a double-team on 3rd down.

It was back to the bench for Ray Rice, as Willis McGahee returned to Baltimore and played well. Next up: a visit home for Ray-Ray and a chance to take on the Super Bowl Champion New York Football Giants.

Eagle fans are not happy with L.J. Smith.

Another thing to keep an eye on:

Last year, 53 underclassmen were eligible for the draft. The year before, the number was 40. Many think the number could exceed 80 this time around.

“I’m planning for that,” said an NFC personnel director. “We’re doing some things differently this year. I told our guys we have to start looking quicker [at the underclassmen] and start putting lists together of people in their areas. I told them, ‘When you’re at the school, pay closer attention than usual’ to the underclassmen.

An agent who regularly represents multiple first-round picks echoed the personnel man’s sentiment.

“That’s totally the buzz I’m hearing,” he said. “I’m hearing this guy wants to come out and that guy wants to come out. They want to come out mainly out of the fear that something’s going to be done about the rookie wage situation.”
